Backlapping
DANGER
TO AVOID PERSONAL INJURY OR DEATH:
D Never place hands or feet in the reel area
while the engine is running. Stay away from the
cutting reels when backlapping.
D When backlapping, run engine at idle speed
only.
D While backlapping, the reels may stall a nd
then restart.
D Do notattempt torestart reelsby handorfoot.
D Do not adjust reels while the engine is
running.
D If a reel stalls, stop engine before
attempting to clear the reel.
D Reel motors are connected in series: rotating
one motor causes rotation in other motors.

1. Position the machine on a level surface, lower the
cutting units, stop the engine and engage the parking
brake.
2. Makeinitial reel tobedknife adjustments appropriate
for backlapping on all cutting units which areto be back-
lapped.
3. Raise and support operator seat to access the hy-
draulic mow control manifold.
NOTE: When backlapping, the front cutting units oper-
ate together and the rear cutting units operate together.
4. Locate backlap levers on mow control manifold. Ro-
tate front, rear or both backlap levers to the backlap
position (R on the manifold).
5. Start engine and run at low idle speed (1550 RPM).
6. With the mow speed limiter in the mow position,
move the PTO switch to the ON position. Press the lift
switch to start the backlapping operation on the desig-
nated reels.
IMPORTANT: To prevent damage to the reel, do not
rotate the backlap lever from the backlap position
(R) to the mow position (F) while the engine is run-
ning.

7. Apply lapping compound to cutting reels with a long
handle brush (see Special Tools) (Fig. 20). Never use a
short handled brush to apply lapping compound.
Reels may stall or become erratic while
backlapping. Do not attempt to restart reels by
hand or touch reels while backlapping. If the
reels stall or become erratic during
backlapping, increase engine speed slightly
until the reel speed stabilizes.
