Electronic Control Module (ECM)
The Toro Electronic Control Module (ECM) senses the
condition of variousswitches (inputs) and directs power
output to allow certain machine functions. The ECM is
located behind the control arm access cover next to the
fuse block (Fig. 44). The handheld Diagnostic Display
(see Special Tools in this chapter) with the correct over-
lay shouldbe usedwhen checking inputsand outputs of
the ECM used on your Reelmaster (see Troubleshoot-
ing in this chapter).
Inputs from the ignition, neutral, parking brake, PTO,
seat,cuttingunitbacklap,mow/transport, joysticklower/
raise, cutting unit up limit, temperature gauge output,
engine oil pressure and engine high temperature shut-
down switches are all monitored by the ECM.
Current output to the mow circuit hydraulic valve sole-
noid coils, lift circuit hydraulicvalve solenoid coils, diag-
nostic light and engine components (glow plug relay,
start relay, fuel pump and engine run solenoid) are con-
trolled based on the inputs received by the ECM.
If the ECM detects a malfunctionin any of the controlled
circuits, the Diagnostic light can be used to identify the
fault (see Diagnostic Light in the Troubleshooting sec-
tion of this chapter).
BecauseofthesolidstatecircuitrybuiltintotheElectron-
ic Control Module, there is no method to test it directly.
The ECM may be damaged if an attempt is made to test
itwith anelectricaltest device,suchasa digitalmultime-
ter.
IMPORTANT: Before performing welding on the ma-
chine, disconnect both positive and negative bat-
tery cables from the battery, disconnect both wire
harness connectors from the Electronic Control
Moduleanddisconnect theterminalconnectorfrom
the alternator to prevent damage to the electrical
system.
