speed. The FP High Speed Sync
mode causes the Speedlight to
emit a series of lower power
flashes that coincide with the
movement of the shutter across
the focal plane, which is where the
digital sensor is. The drawback to
FP High Speed Sync is that it
diminishes the range of the
Speedlight. FP High Speed Sync
mode can be used all the way up
the maximum shutter speed or
1/8000 second.
Cloudy bright sunlight. This
occurs when it is overcast, but you
have slight shadows. This type of
light is very good for photograph-
ing in. It’s comparable to the light
from a good softbox. All you may
need to do is use your Speedlight
to add a little fill-flash.
Open shade. Open shade is
defined as when your subject is in
the shade but there is blue sky
overhead. This situation is usually
achieved by placing your subject in
the shade of a building, which is a
good, soft (but fairly bright) light.
You can set your lighting up as you
like without having to worry about
too many harsh shadows from
the sun.
Closed shade. You find this type
of lighting under a dense tree or
under an overhang such as a
veranda or porch. There aren’t too
many problems here caused by
lighting or shadow. Set up with the
lighting pattern of your choice and
shoot.
When using light stands out-
doors, having sandbags placed
on the stands feet to prevent the
wind from blowing it over is
best. Sandbags are commer-
cially available through photog-
raphy stores, or you can make
your own.

Traveling with Your
Wireless Studio
The first consideration you want to make
when traveling with your wireless studio is
getting a durable case for your equipment.
Let’s face it, photo gear is expensive and
delicate. You don’t want to stick your equip-
ment in a suitcase and leave it to the mercy
of the baggage handlers at the airport.

A good feature about using Nikon
Speedlights for your portable studio is that
they are compact. They fit in almost any
camera bag —and there are many types of
camera bags and cases from which to
choose. Depending on the size and level of
protection you are looking for, you may
spend hundreds of dollars to as little as 20
dollars. Here are a few different types:
