Changing the Engine Oil
Ifthe enginehasbeenrecentlyrun,the engine,mufflerandsur-
roundingmetalsurfaceswillbe hotandcan causeburnsto the skin.
Exercisecautiontoavoidburns.
NOTE:The oilfiltershouldbechangedat everyoilchangeinterval.To
completeanoilchange,proceedasfollows:
1. WithengineOFFbutstillwarm,disconnectsparkplugwire and
keepit awayfromsparkplug.
2. Removetheoil fill cap/dipstickfromthe oil fill tube.See Figure20.

Removethe airfiltercover.
To removetheairfilter,lift theendof the filter.SeeFigure21.

3. Disconnectthe oil drainhosefromthesideof theengine.
4. Turnand removethe oildraincap.Carefullylowerthe quickoil
drainintoanapprovedcontainer.
5. Aftertheoil hasdrained,installtheoildraincap.Attachtheoil
drainhoseto the sideof theengine.
Usedoil is a hazardouswasteproduct.Disposeof usedoil properly.
Donotdiscardwith householdwaste.Checkwithyourlocalauthori-
tiesor SearsServiceCenterfor safedisposal/recyclingfacilities.
6. Reconnectsparkplugwire.
Air Cleaner
Iffilters,orcoversarenotinstalledcorrectlyseriousinjuryor death
could resultfrombackfire.Donotattemptto startthe enginewith
them removed.
Do notuse pressurizedairor solventsto cleanthe aircleaner
cartridge.

3. Removethe pre-cleanerfromthe filter.
4. To loosendebris,gentlytap thefilterona hardsurface.If thefilter
isexcessivelydirty,replacewitha newfilter.
5. Washthe pre-cleanerinliquiddetergentandwater.Allowitto
thoroughlyair dry.Donot oilthe pre-cleaner.
6. Assemblethedrypre-cleanerto the filter.
7. Installthefilterintotheenginebaseand pushdownuntilthe filter
snapsinplace.
8. Installthecover.
Spark Plug
1. Cleanareaaroundthesparkplugbase.Donot sandblastspark
plug.Sparkplugshouldbecleanedby scrapingor wirebrushing
andwashingwitha commercialsolvent
2. Removeandinspectthe sparkplug.Checkgaptomakesureit is
setat .030".SeeFigure22.
