BLADES
Besureto shuttheengineoff,removeignitionkey,disconnectthe
sparkplugwire(s)topreventunintendedstartingbeforeremovingthe
cuttingblade(s)forsharpeningor replacement.Protectyourhands
b_ usng heavygovesor a ragtograspthecuttng bade.
Thebladesmayberemovedasfollows:
1. Removethedeckfrombeneaththetractor,(referto CuttingDeck
Removal)thengentlyflipthedeckoverto exposeitsunderside.
NOTE:Placea blockofwoodbetweenthedeck housingandthe
cuttingedgeofthe bladetohelpin breakingloosethehexnutsecuring
theblade.
2. Usea 15/16"wrenchtoloosenthehexflangenutsecuringthe
bladetothebottomofthespindleassembly.Securethespindle
byeitherholdingthebladetightly,orbyusinga secondwrenchto
holdthenutatthetopofthespindle.
3. Continueholdingthebladeontothestarhubofthespindle,and
removetheflangenutandcuttingblade.
4. Repeatthepreviousstepstoremovetheotherblade.
5. Toproperlysharpenthecuttingblades,removeequalamounts
ofmetalfrombothendsofthebladesalongthecuttingedges,
paralleltothetrailingedge,ata 250to300angle.
iMPORTANT:ifthecuttingedgeofthebladehasalreadybeen
sharpenedtowithin1-5/8"widthfromtheoppositeedge,or ifany
metalseparationis present,replacethebladeswith newones.See
Figure20.

Itis importantthateachcuttingbladeedgebegroundequallyto
maintainproperbladebalance.
A poorlybalancedbladewillcauseexcessivevibrationand may
causedamagetothetractorand resultin personalinjury.The
bladecanbetestedbybalancingit ona roundshaftscrewdriver.
Grindmetalfromtheheavysideuntilit balancesevenly.
iMPORTANT:Whenreplacingtheblades,makecertainthesideofthe
blademarked"Bottom"facesthegroundwhenthemoweristurnedto
theoperatingposition.
iMPORTANT:Notethatthestarsoftheblades(andspindles)are not
symmetrical.Thebladecanbeinstalledoneachspindlein onlyone
direction.Carefullyalignthestarholeof thebladewiththestarofthe
spindleshaftwheninstallingeachblade.DONOTimproperlyalignthe
bladeandspindleshaft,andattempttoseatthebladeontothe spindle
bytighteningthehexflangenut.
8. Rotatethebladeasnecessarytoalignits starholewiththestar
ofthespindleshaft,thenslidethebladeontothespindleshaft.
Threadthehexflangeontothespindleshaftandusea torque
wrenchtotightenthehexflangenutto 70to90foot-pounds.
9. Repeattheaboveproceduretoinstalltheotherblade.
Checking Blade Timing
Duringnormaloperationthetimingofthecuttingbladescanbealtered
byabnormalloadsonone,orboth,cuttingblades.Regularlycheckthe
timingarrowsonthespindleassembliestomakecertaintheyare900
fromeachother.
Ifthetimingarrowsarenot900fromeachother,proceedasfollows:
1. Removethedeckfromthetractor.Removetheidlerbracket
backstop.Referto Figure21.
