3. Removeyourfootfromthebrakepedal.
4. Releasepressurefromtheparkingbrakelever.
Aftercompletingstep3,thebrakepedalshouldremainin thedown
position.If itdoesn't,the parkingbrakeisnotengaged.Repeatsteps
1-4toengagetheparkingbrake.
Todisengagetheparkingbrake,lightlypressthe brakepedal.
Neverleavea runningmachineunattended.AlwaysdisengagePTO,
setparkingbrake,stopengineand removekeytopreventunintended
starting.
ENGAGING THE PTO
EngagingthePTOtransferspowertothecuttingdeckor other
(separatelyavailable)attachments.ToengagethePTO:
1. MovethethrottlecontrollevertotheFAST(rabbit)position.
2. PullthePTO/BladeEngageknoboutwardintotheengaged(ON)
position.
NOTE:Alwaysoperatethetractorwiththethrottleleverin theFAST
(rabbit)positionforthemostefficientuseofthecuttingdeckorother
(separatelyavailable)PTOdrivenattachments.
MOWING
Tohelpavoidbladecontactor a thrownobjectinjury,keepbystand-
ers,helpers,childrenandpetsatleast75feetfromthemachine
whileitis inoperation.Stopmachineifanyoneentersthearea.
ThistractorisequippedwithoneofCraftsman'shighqualitycutting
decks.Thefollowinginformationwillbehelpfulwhenusingthecutting
deckwithyourtractor.
Donotmowathighgroundspeed,especiallyifa mulchkitor
grasscollectorisinstalled.
Forbestresultsitis recommendedthatthefirsttwolapsbecut
withthedischargethrowntowardsthecenter.Afterthefirsttwo
laps,reversethedirectiontothrowthedischargetotheoutside
forthebalanceofcutting.Thiswillgivea betterappearancetothe
lawn.
Donotcut thegrasstooshort.Shortgrassinvitesweedgrowth
andyellowsquicklyindryweather.
Mowingshouldalwaysbedonewiththeengineatfullthrottle.
Underheavierconditionsitmaybenecessarytogo backoverthe
cutareaa secondtimetogeta cleancut.
Donotattempttomowheavybrushandweedsandextremelytall
grass.Yourtractorisdesignedto mowlawns,notclearbrush.
Keepthebladessharpandreplacethebladeswhenworn.Refer
tothe"Service& Maintenance"sectionofthis manualforproper
bladesharpeninginstructions.
IMPORTANT:Whenstoppingthetractorforanyreasonwhileona
grasssurface,always:
1. Engagethe parkingbrake.
2. Shutengineoffand removethekey.
Doingsowillminimizethepossibilityofhavingyourlawn"browned"by
hotexhaustfromyourtractor'srunningengine.
MOVING THE TRACTOR MANUALLY
Ifforanyreasonthetractorwillnotdriveoryouwishtomovethe
tractor,engagethetwo transmissionreleaseleverstomanuallymove
thetractorshortdistances.
IMPORTANT:Nevertowor dragthetractorwiththerearwheelsonthe
ground.Evenwiththe releaseleversengaged.Doingsowilldamage
thetransmissions.
Toengagea releaselever:
1. Pulltheleverrearwardsothattheelbowpassesthroughthe
larger/roundedpartofthekeyholeslot.
2. Withtheelbowoftheleveroutside(rearward)ofthehitchplate,
pushtheleverinwardinthesmallpartofthekeyholeslotsothat
lever'selbowislockedagainstthebackofthehitchplate.
3. Repeattoengagetheotherreleaselevertoallowthetractortobe
manuallymoved.SeeFigure6.

4. Tomovethetractormanually,thebrakemustbedisengagedby
releasingtheparkingbrakeanddepressingtheforwardor reverse
drivepedal.Continueto holdthedrivepedalwhilepushing.
5. Todisengage,movethelevertoalignitselbowwiththelarger/
roundedpartofthekeyholeslotand releasetheleverback
throughthehitchplate.
NOTE:Thetransmissionwill NOTengagewhenthereleaseleveris
pulledout.Returntheleverto itsnormalpositionpriortooperatingthe
tractor.
HEADLIGHTS
Thetractorheadlightsare turnedonwheneverthe ignitionswitchis
turnedtoeitheroftherunpositions.
