Operation
Starting the Engine
IMPORTANT:Always unplug the battery float charger before
starting the generator.
Disconnect all electrical loads from the generator. Usethe
following start instructions:
1. Make sure unit is on a level surface.
IMPORTANT:Failureto start and operate the unit on a level
surface will causethe unit not to start or shut down during
operation.
2. Turn the fuel valve to the "On" position. The fuel valve
handle should be vertical (pointing toward the ground)
for fuel to flow.
3. Push choke leverto "Choke" position (1_,1).
4. Pushengine rocker switch to "On".
5A. Forelectricstarting, push and hold the start button in
start position until generator starts. To prolong the life
of starter components, DO NOThold start switch in
start position for more than 15 seconds, and pause for
at least 1 minute betweenstarting attempts.
If engine starts, proceedto step 7.
If engine fails to start, proceed to step 6.
NOTE:If battery is discharged, use manualstarting
instructions.
5B. Formanualstarting, grasp recoil handle and pull
slowly until slight resistance is felt. Then pull rapidly
one time only to start engine.
_i, WARNING Starter cord kickback(rapid retraction) can
II result in bodily injury. Kickbackwill pull hand and
,11_ arm toward enginefasterthan you can let go.
Broken bones,fractures, bruises, or sprains
could result.
Whenstartingengine,pullcordslowlyuntilresistanceisfelt
andthenpull rapidlyto avoidkickback.
NEVERstartor stopenginewith electricaldevicespluggedin
andturnedon.

If engine starts, proceed to step 7.
If engine fails to start, proceedto step 6.
Move choke lever to "Half" choke position, and pull
recoil handletwice.
If engine fails to start, repeatsteps 5 thru 7.
7. Slowly move choke lever to "Run" position (1_,1).If
engine falters, move choke leverto "Half" choke
position until engine runs smoothly, andthen to "Run"
position (l÷l).
IMPORTANT:If engine floods, place choke lever in "Run"
position (I t i) and crank until engine starts.
NOTE:If engine starts after 3 pulls but fails to run, or if unit
shuts down during operation, makesure unit is on a level
surface and checkfor proper oil level in crankcase.This unit
may be equippedwith a low oil protection device. If so, oil
must be at proper level for engine to start.
_i, WARNING Contact with muffler area can result in
serious burns.
Exhaust heat/gases can ignite
combustibles, structures or damage
fuel tank causing a fire.
DO NOTtouch hot parts and AVOIDhot exhaust gases.
Allow equipment to cool before touching.
Keep at least5 feet (152 cm) of clearanceon all sides of
generator including overhead.
It is a violation of California Public Resource Code,Section
4442, to use or operate the engine on any forest-covered,
brush-covered, or grass-covered land unless the exhaust
system is equipped with a spark arrester, as defined in Section
4442, maintained in effective working order. Other states or
federal jurisdictions may have similar laws.
Contact the original equipment manufacturer, retailer, or dealer
to obtain a spark arrester designed for the exhaust system
installed on this engine.
Replacement parts must bethe same and installed in the same
position as the original parts.
