CHECKINGANDADJUSTING
FORWARDDRIVEBELTTENSION
Maintaining correct tension on the
forward drivebelt is important to good
tilling performanceand long belt life. A
loosebelt will slip on the engine and
22
transmission pulleysand cause thetines
and wheelsto slow down - or stop com-
pletely- eventhough the engine is
running at full speed. A loose beltcan
also result in premature beltwear.
If youfind youcan not bring the Forward
Clutch Bailall the way upto the bottom of
the upper handlebars,you will needto
loosenthe belt tension.
Also checkthe beltfor cracks,cuts or
frayed edgesand replaceitas soon as
possible.
Checkbelttension after the first two
hours of initial operation (new belt).
Checkbelttension after every 10
operating hours.
To CheckForwardBeltTension:
1. Besure that the engine is stopped and
the spark plug wire is disconnectedand
moved awayfrom the spark plug.
2. Loosen nut "C" (Figure5-4) several
turns so it isabout halfway up the
threaded adjustment screw.
3. Lift the Forward Clutch Bail upand
hold itto the bottom of the handlebars.
Measurethe length of the clutch bail
spring (A,Figure5-4) with a ruler. If the
belttension is correct, the length ofthe
coiled portion of the spring should be
approximately 1-7/8". Nut "C" should
then besnuggeddown against thetop of
the adjuster (B).
4. If the spring istoo short, the belt
tension will betoo loose. If thespring is
too long, the belt tension will be too tight.
5. Toadjust the length ofthe spring,
releasethe ForwardClutch Bail. Thread
the hexnut (C, Fig.5-4) halfway upthe
adjustment screw. Turn the screw inside
the spring (A, Figure5-4) counterclock-
wise (asviewed from the operator's
position) while holding the adjuster (B)
steadyto increasethe length of the
spring, or turn clockwise (as viewedfrom
the operator's position) to decreasethe
length of the spring.
NOTE:If you havedifficulty holding the
adjuster steadyby hand,usea pliers or
wrench on the adjuster. Whileyou turn
the screw, keepthe ForwardClutch Cable
