the work area. Do not allow other people
or animalsto benear thechain saw when
starting or o perating the chain saw.
S Do not handle or operate a chain saw when
you a re fatigued, ill, or upset, or if you have
taken alcohol, drugs, or medication. Y ou
must bei ngoodphysicalconditionandmen-
tally alert. Chain saw work is strenuous. If

vated by strenuous work, check with your
doctor before opera ting a chain saw .

OPERATE YOUR SAW SAFELY
S Donotoperateachainsawwithonehand.
Serious injuryto theoperator, helper s,by-
standers orany combination ofthese per -
sons may result from one-handed opera-
tion. A chain saw is intended for
two-handed use.
S Operatethechainsawonlyinawell-venti-
lated outdoor area.
S Donotoperatesawfromaladder orin atree.
S Makesure t hechain willnotmakecontact
with any object while starting the engine.
Never try to start the saw when the guide
bar is in a cut.
S Do no tput pressureon thesaw atthe endof
the cut. A pplying pr essure can cause you to
lose control when the cut is completed.
S Stop the engine before setting the saw
down.
S Do not operate a chain saw that is dam-
aged, improperly adjusted, or not com-
pletely a nd securely assembled. Always
replace bar , chain, hand guard, or chain
brakeim mediatelyifitbecomesdamaged,
broken or i s otherwise removed.
S With the engine stopped, hand carry the
chainsaw w iththemuffleraway fromyour
body , and the guide bar and chain to the
rear, preferably covered with a scabbard.
MAINTAIN YOUR SAW IN GOOD
WORKING ORDER
S Haveallchainsawserviceperformedbya
qualifiedservice dealerwith theexception
oftheitems listedinthe m aintenancesec-
tionofthis manual. Fore xample,ifimprop-
ertools areusedtoremoveor holdthefly-
wheelwhenservicingtheclutch,structural
damage to the flywheel can occur and
cause the flywheel to burst.
S Make certain the sawchain stops moving
when the throttle trigger is released. For
correction, refer to CARBURETOR AD-
JUSTMENT.
S Never modify your saw in any way.
S Keepthehandlesdry,clean,andfreeofoil
or fuel m ixture.
S Keep fuel and oil caps, screws, and fas-
teners securely tightened.
S Use only Poulan acce s sories and repl ace-
ment parts as recommended.
HANDLE FU EL WITH CAUTION
S Do not smoke while handling f uelor while
operating the saw.
S Eliminateall sources o fsparks orflame i n
the areas where fuel is mixed or poured.
Thereshouldbenosmoking,openflames,
orworkthatcouldcausesparks. Allowen-
gine to cool before r efueling.
S Always have fireextinguishing tools avail-
able if you should needthem.
S Mix and pour fuel in an outdoor area on
bare ground; store fuel in a cool, dry, well
ventilated place; and use an approved,
marked container for all fuel purposes.
Wipe up allfuel spills before starting saw.
S Move atleast 10feet(3meters) f romfuel-
ing site before starting engine.
S Turn the engine of f and let saw cool in a
non-combustible area, not on dry leaves,
straw, paper,etc. Slowly remove fuelcap
and refuel unit.
S Storet heunitandfuelinanareawheref uel
vapors cannot reach sparks or open
flamesfromwaterheaters, electricmotors
or switches, furnaces, etc.
KICKBACK
WARNING: A void kickback w hich
can r esult in serious in jury . K ickback is the
backward, upward or sudden fo rward motion
of the guid e baroccurring when t he saw chain
neartheuppertip oftheguidebarcontactsany
object such as a log o r branch, or w hen the
wood closes in and pinches the saw chain in
thecut. C ontactingaforeign objectin thewood
can also result in loss of chain saw control.
S Rotational K ickbackcanoccurwhenthe
movingchaincontactsan objectattheup-
per tip of the guide bar. This contact can
cause the chain to dig into t he object,
which stops the chain for an instant. The
result is a lightning fast, reverse reaction
which kicks the guidebar up andback to-
ward the operator.
