Emission information
Enginesthat are certified to meetthe CaliforniaAir Resources
Board(CARB) EmissionStandards must display information
regardingthe Emissions Durability Periodand Air Index.The
engine manufacturer makesthis information availableto the
consumer on emission labels. Theengine emission labelwill
indicate certification information.
TheEmissionsDurabilityPeriod describesthe number of
hours of actual running time for which the engine is certified
to beemissions compliant, assuming proper maintenancein
accordancewith the Operating& MaintenanceInstructions.
Thefollowing categoriesare used:
Moderate: Engineis certified to be emission compliant for
125 hours of actual engine running time.
Intermediate: Engineis certified to beemission compliant
for 250 hours of actual engine running time.
Extended:Engineis certified to beemission compliant for
500 hours of actual engine running time.
Forexample,a typical walk-behind lawn mower is used 20 to
25 hours per year. Therefore,the EmissionsDurability
Period of an engine with an intermediaterating would
equateto 10to 12 years.
Certainengineswill be certified to meetthe UnitedStates
EnvironmentalProtection Agency (USEPA)Phase2 emission
standards. Forphase2 certified engines, the Emissions
CompliancePeriod referredto on the Emissions Compliance
label indicatesthe number of operating hours for which the
engine hasbeen shown to meetFederalemission
requirements.
Forenginesless than 225cc displacement:
CategoryC = 125 hours
CategoryB = 250 hours
CategoryA = 500 hours.
Forenginesof 225 cc or more displacement:
CategoryC = 250 hours
CategoryB = 500 hours
CategoryA = 1000 hours.
