CUTTING METHODS
OPERATING TIPS
S Check chain tension before first use
and after 1 minute of operation. See
CHECKCHAINTENSIONin theMAINTE-
NANCE
section.
S Cut wood o nly. Do not cut met a l, pl a s-
ti cs, masonry, non- wood buil di ng mate-
rial s, etc.
S Stop the saw if th e chain strikes a for-
eign object . Inspect the saw and repair
parts as necessary.
S Keep the chain out o f dirt and sand.
Even a s m all amount of dirt wil l quickly
dul l a cha in and incr ease the possibility
of kickback.
S Practice cutt i n g a f ew small logs usi ng
the followi ng steps.Thiswillhe lp youge t

S Squeeze tr i gger switch and all ow unit
to r each ful l speed before cut ti ng.
S Begin cutting with the saw frame
against the log.
S Keep the motorat full speed the en-
tire time you are cutting.
S Release the trigger switch as soon
as the cutiscompleted,allowingthe
motor to stop.
S Keep the cord away from the c ut t i ng
area . Position cord so i t will not be
caught on branches and the l i ke dur-
ing cutting.
S To avoid losing control when cut is
complete, do not put pressure on
saw at end of cut.
S Stop motor before sett ing saw down.
TREE FELLING TECHNIQUES
WARNING: Check for broken or
dead branches which can fall while cut-
ting c ausing s erious injury. Do not cut
near b uildings or electrical wires if you
do notknow the direction oftree fall, nor
cut at night since you will not be able to
see well, nor during bad weather such
as rain,snow,or strongwinds,etc. Ifthe
tree doe s make contact with any utility
line, the utility company should be noti-
fied immediately.
S Carefull y pl an your sawi ng operat i on i n
advance.
S Clear the work area. You need a clear
areaallaroundthetreeso youcanhave
secur e footing .
S The chain saw o perator should keep
on the uph ill side of the terrain as the
tree is likely to rollor slide downhilla f-
ter it is felled.
S Study t he natur al conditions that can
cause t he tree to fall ina par ticulardirec-
tion, such as:
S The wind direction and speed.
S The leanof the tree. The leanofatree
mi gh t not be apparent due to uneven
or slopingterrain.Us e aplum b orlevel
to de ter m ine the di rect ionof tree lea n.
S Weight and branches on one side.
S Surrounding trees and obstacles.
S Look for dec ay and rot. If the trunk is
rotted, it can snap and fall toward the
operator.
S Make sure there is enough room for
the tree to fall. Maintain a distance of
2-1/2treelengthsfromthenearestper-
son orotherobjects.Noise can drown
out a warning call.
S Removedirt,stones,looseba rk,nails,
staples, and wire from the tree where
cuts are to be made.

using saw to remove buttress roots,
keep saw chain from contacting ground
to prevent dulling of the chain.
NOTCH CUT AND FELLING TREE
S Make notch cut by cutt i ng the top of the
notc h f ir st. Cut throug h
1/3 of the
diameter of the t r ee. Next complet e the
not ch by cut ting thebottom. Seeillustra-
tion. Once t he notch i s cut, r emove t h e
