MAINTENANCE
WARNING: Disconnect the spark
plug before performing maintenance except
for carburetor adjustments.
HELPFUL TIP
IMPORTANT: Have all
repairs other than the rec-
ommended maintenance
described in the instruction
manual performed by an
authorized service dealer.
If any dealer other than an authorized
service dealer performs work on the
product, Poulan PRO may not pay for
repairs under warranty. It is your re-
sponsibility to ma intain and perform
general maintenance.

CHECK FOR DAMAGED OR
WORN PARTS
Contact a n authorized ser vice dealer for re-
placement o f damaged or worn par ts.
S ON/STOP Switch -- Ensure ON/ST OP
swit ch functions properly by pushing and
releasing the swi tch. Make su re engine
stops. Wait 5 seconds before attemptingto
restart unit to allow switch to reset. R estart
engine and continue.
S Fuel Tank -- Discontinue use of unit if fuel
tank shows signs of damage or leaks.
S Debris Shield -- Discontinue use of unit if
debris shield is damaged.
INSPECT AND CLEAN UNIT AND
LABELS
S After each use , inspect complete unit for
loose o rdamaged parts. Clean t h eunit a nd
labels using a damp cloth with a m ild deter-
gent.
S Wipe off unit with a clean dry cloth.
CLEAN AIR F ILTER
A dirty air filter decreases engine per form-
ance and increases fuel consumption and
harmful emissions. Always clean after eve ry
5 hours of operation.
1. Clean the cover and the area a round it to
keep dirt f rom falling into the carburetor
chamber when the cover is removed.
2. Remove parts by pressing button to re-
lease air filter cover.
NOTE: To avoid cr eating a fir e hazard or
producingharmful evaporative emissions, do
not clean filter in ga soline or other flammable
solve nt.
3. W ash the filter in soap and water.
4. Allow filt er to dr y.
5. Replace parts.

MUFFLER AND SPARK ARREST-
ING SCREEN
WARNING: The muffler on t his prod-
uct contains chemica ls known to th e State of
Califo rnia to cause cancer.
As yourunit is used, carbon deposits buildup
on the muffler and spark arresting screen.
For normal homeowner use, however, the
muffler andspark arresting screen will not r e-
quire any service. A fter 5 0 hours of use, we
recommend t hat your muffler be serviced or
replaced by your authorized service dealer.
REPLACE SPARK PLUG
Replace the spark plug each year to ensure
the engine starts easier and runs better. Set
spark plug gap at 0.025 inch (0.6 mm). Igni-
tion timing is fixed and nonadjustable.
NOTE: This spark ignition system complies
with the Canadian standard ICES--00 2.
1. Twist, then pull off spark plug boot.
2. Remove spark plug from cylinder and
discard.
3. Replace with Champion RCJ-6Y spark
plug and tighten securely with a 3/4 inch
(19 mm) socket wrench.
4. Reinstall the spark plug boot .
EDGER BLADE MAINTENANCE
WARNING: The blade will continue
to spin after the engine stops or after the
throttle trigger has been released. To avoid
serious injury, make sure the blade has
stopped coasting and disconnect the spark
plug before performing w ork on the blade.
WARNING: Always replace a blade
that is bent, warped, cracked, broken, or
damaged in any other w ay. Never attempt to
straighten and reuse a dam aged blade. Use
only specified replacement blade. Wear pro-
tective gloves when handling or performing
maintenance onthe bladeto helpavoidinjury.
S The blade is reversible. When the cutting
edge on one side beco m es worn, turn the
blade over (see BLADE REPLACEMENT
in the SERVICE AND ADJUSTMENTS
section).
S Check blade for flatness periodically. Lay
the blade on a flat su rface to inspect for
flatness.Throw away ablade thatis notflat.
