Fuel Filter Muffler
Gasolineanditsvaporsareextremelyflammableandexplosive.Fire
or explosioncan causesevereburnsor death.
Keepgasolineawayfromsparks,openflames,pilotlights,heat,
andotherignitionsources.
Checkfuellines,tank,cap,andfittingsfrequentlyfor cracks
orleaks.Replaceif necessary.Seea Searsorother qualified
servicedealerto replacefuelline.
Beforereplacingthefuel filter,drainthe fueltankor closethe fuel
shut-offvalve.
Replacementpartsmustbethe sameandinstalledinthe same
positionas theoriginalparts.
If fuelspills,waituntil it evaporatesbeforestartingengine.
To Drainthe Fuel:
1. Locatethefuel filter,whichis routedon the leftsideof theengine
betweenthe fueltankandthe carburetor,andmaybeattachedto
the enginewithatie strap.
2. Cutthe tiestrap,if present,thenpinchthe in-lineclampon the
fuelfilterwitha pairof pliers.
3. Slidetheclampupthe fuelline.
4. Pullthefuel linefree fromthefilterandplacetheopenendof the
lineintoan approvedcontainerto drainthe fuel.
To Replacethe FuelFilter:
1. Beforereplacingthefuel filter,drainthefueltankor closethe fuel
shut-offvalve.Otherwise,fuel can leakoutandcausea fire or
explosion.
2. Usepliersto squeezetabson theclamps,then slidetheclamps
awayfromthefuel filter.Twistand pullthefuel linesoff of the fuel
filter.SeeFigure31.

3. Checkthefuellinesforcracksor leaks.Replaceif necessary.
4. Replacethefuel filterwithanoriginalequipmentreplacement
filter.
5. Securethe fuellineswiththe clamps.
Temperatureofmufflerandnearbyengineareasmayexceed150° F
(65°0).Avoidcontactwiththeseareas.
Inspectmufflerperiodically,andreplaceif necessary.Replacement
partsfor themufflermustbethe sameandinstalledin the same
positionas theoriginalparts.
Clean Engine
Donot usewaterto cleanengineparts.Watercouldcontaminatefuel
system.Usea brushor dry cloth.
Dailyor beforeeveryuse,cleangrass,chaff oraccumulated
debrisfromengine.Keeplinkage,spring,andcontrolsclean.
Keepareaaroundand behindmufflerfreeof anycombustible
debris.
Keepingenginecleanallowsair movementaroundengine.
Enginepartsshouldbekeptcleanto reducethe riskof overheat-
ingandignitionofaccumulateddebris.
Carburetor Adjustment
The carburetoron thisengineis notadjustable.
Battery
Batteryposts,terminals,and relatedaccessoriescontainleadand
leadcompounds,chemicalsknownto the StateofCaliforniato cause
cancerand reproductiveharm.Washhandsafter handling.
The batteryissealedandis maintenance-free.Acidlevelscannotbe
checkedandfluid cannotbe added.
Alwayskeepthe batterycablesandterminalscleanandfree of
corrosivebuild-up.
Aftercleaningthe batteryandterminals,applya lightcoatof
petroleumjelly orgreaseto bothterminals.
Ifremovingthe batteryforcleaning,disconnectthe NEGATIVE
(Black)wire fromitsterminalfirst,followedby thePOSITIVE(Red)
wire.Whenreinstallingthebattery,alwaysconnectthe POSITIVE
(Red)wire toitsterminalfirst,followedbytheNEGATIVE(Black)
wire.Becertainthatthe wiresareconnectedto thecorrectterminals;
reversingthemcouldresultinseriousdamageto yourengine's
alternatingsystem.
