Exploding Battery
CAUTION: Battery gas can explode. Keep
sparks and flames away from batteries. Use a
flashlight to check battery electrolyte level.
Never check battery charge by placing a metal
object across the posts. Use a voltmeter or
hydrometer.
Always remove grounded NEGATIVE (–) battery
clamp first and replace it last.
WARNING: Battery posts, terminals, and related
accessories contain lead and lead compounds, chemicals
known to the State of California to cause cancer and
reproductive harm. Wash hands after handling.
1. On regular batteries, check electrolyte level. Fill each
cell to bottom of filler neck with distilled water.
NOTE: Low-maintenance or maintenance-free batteries
should require little additional service. However,
electrolyte level can be checked by cutting the
center section of decal on dash-line, and
removing cell plugs. If necessary, add clean, soft
water to bring level to bottom of filler neck.
2. Keep batteries clean by wiping them with a damp cloth.
Keep all connections clean and tight. Remove any
corrosion, and wash terminals with a solution of 1 part
baking soda and 4 parts water. Tighten all connections
securely.
NOTE: Coat battery terminals and connectors with a
mixture of petroleum jelly and baking soda to
retard corrosion.
3. Keep battery fully charged, especially during cold
weather. If a battery charger is used, turn charger off
before connecting charger to battery(ies). Attach
POSITIVE (+) battery charger lead to POSITIVE (+)
battery post. Then attach NEGATIVE (–) battery
charger lead to a good ground.
