If carbon build-up cannot be cleaned, replace the muffler.
3. Inspect the muffler mounting holes for elongation.
Replace the muffler if the holes are elongated.
Muffler Reassembly
1. Install a new gasket*. Make sure the arrow stamped
into the gasket is to your right. Tuck the tab (with the
arrow) between the cylinder and plastic shroud
(Fig. 38).
2. Install the muffler with the muffler mounting bolts (see
Fig. 35) and torque the bolts to 80-90 inlb
(9-10.1 Nm).
Inspection and Cleaning
1. Check the inlet port of the muffler and outlet port of
the cylinder for excessive carbon deposits (Fig. 36).
Clean as required.

2. Inspect the baffle inside the muffler for carbon build-
up. Clean baffle by scraping carbon as required. Use a
piece of wire to clear obstructions from the small
holes in baffle (Fig. 37).
