CLEAN AIR FILTER
A dirty air filter decreases engine perform-
ance and incr eases fuel consumption and
harmful emissions. Always clean after every
5 hours of operation.
1. Clean the cover and the area around it to
keep dirt from falling into the carbur etor
chamber when the cover is removed.
2. Remove parts by pressing button to re-
lease air filter cover .
NOTE: To avoid creating a fire hazard or
producingharmful evaporative emissi o ns, do
not clean filter in ga soline or other f lam m able
solve nt.
3. Wash the filter in soap and water.
4. Allow filter to dry.
5. Replace parts.

BAR MAINTENANCE
If your prun er cuts to one side, has to be
forcedthrough the cut,or beenrunwithanim-
proper amount of bar lubrication it may be
necessary toserviceyourbar. Awo rnbar will
damage your chain andmake cuttingdif ficult.
After each use, clean all sawdust from the
guide bar and sp rocket hole.
To maintain guide bar:
S Disconnect spark plug.
S Loosen and rem ove bar clamp nut and
chain brake. Remove bar and chain from
pruner .
S Clean the oil holes and bar groove after
each 5 hours of operation.

S Burring of guide bar rails is a normal
process of rail wear. Remove these burrs
with a flat file.
S When rail top is u n even, use a flat f ile to
restore square edges and sides.

Replace guide bar when the groove is worn,
the guide bar is bent or cracked, or when
exce ss heatingorburringof therails occurs.If
replacementis necessary, useonly theguide
bar specified for your pruner in t he repair
parts list.

MUFFLER AND SPAR K ARREST-
ING SCREEN
WARNING: The muffler on this prod-
uct contains chemica ls known to the State of
Califo rnia to cause cancer .
As yourunit is used, carbon deposits buildup
on the muf fler and spark arresting screen.
For normal hom eowner use, however, the
muffler andspark arresting screen will not re-
quire any service. After 50 hours of use, we
recommend that your muffler be serviced or
replaced by your authorized service dealer.
REPLACE SPARK PLUG
Replace the spark plug each year to ensure
the engine starts easier and runs better. In-
spec t spark plug ev ery 25 hours of usage.
Cleanand/orreplaceas necessary.Set spark
plug gap at 0.025 inch (0.6 mm). Ignition tim-
ing is fixed and nonadjustable.
NOTE: This spark igni tion system complies
with the Canadian st andard ICES--002.
1. Twist, then pull off spark plug boot.
2. Remove spark plug from cylinder and
discard.
3. Replace w ith C hampion RCJ-6Y spark
plug and tighten securely with a 3/4 inch
(19 mm) socket wrench.
4. Reinstall the spark plug boot.
SERVICE AND ADJUSTMENTS
WARNING: Disconnect the spark
plug before performing maintenance, service, or
adjust ments except for carburetor adjustments.
CHAIN SHARPENING
WARNING: Improper chain sha rpen-
ing techniques and/or depth gauge mainte-
nance will increase the chan ce of kickb ack
which can re sult in seri ous injury.
WARNING: Wear protect ive gloves
when handling chai n. T he chain is sh arp a nd
can cut you e ven when it is not movi ng.
Condition s wh ich indicate the need for chain
sharpening:
S Reductioninsize ofwood chips.The sizeof
the wood chip will decrease as the chain
gets duller until it becom es more like a
powder thana chip.Notethatdead orrotted
wood will not produce a good chip.
