4.7 Ignition System
Airborne particles.
Can cause severe injury or blind-
ness.
Wear protective goggles and clothing
when using power tools, hand tools,
or compressed air.
WARNING
Accidental starting.
Can cause severe injury or death.
Disconnect the battery cables before
working on the generator set.
Remove the negative (--) lead first
when disconnecting the battery.
Reconnect the negative (--) lead last
when reconnecting the battery.
WARNING
Disabling the generator set. Accidental starting can
cause severe injury or death. Before working on the
generator set or equipment connected to the set, disable the
generator set as follows: (1) Press the generator set o ff/reset
button to shut down the generator set. (2) Disconnect the
power to the battery charger, if equipped. (3) Remove the
battery cables, negative (--) leadfirst. Reconnect thenegative
(--) lead last when reconnecting the battery. Follow these
precautions to prevent the starting of the generator set by the
remote start/stop switch.
Service the spark plugs at the interval specified in the
service schedule using the following procedure.
1. Press the OFF button on the RDC2 controller.
2. Disconnect the power to the battery charger.
3. Disconnect the generator set engine starting
battery, negative (--) lead first.
4. Use a cloth to wipe dirt and oil away from the area
around each of the four spark plug wires.
5. Remove spark plug wires by grasping the spark
plug boot and turning slightly while pulling. Do not
pullthewire.Pullingonthewireratherthanthe boot
may damage the wire o r terminal.
6. Wipe the interior of the spark plug tubes.
7. Loosen the spark plug with a ratchet and 13/16-in.
spark plug socket with a rubber insert to prevent
spark plug damage.
8. Use compressed air to remove dirt from around
each sparkplug to prevent dirt particles from falling
into the combustion chamber.
9. Remove spark plugs, one at a time, and examine.
Identify a normal spark plug i n good operating
condition by observing a light tan or gray deposit on
firing tip. See Figure 4 -9 to evaluate engine
conditionby color/condition of a problem spark plug.
10. Check that the spark plug washer is in good
condition.
11. Clean spark plugs by wiping them with a rag.
Note: Do not sandblast, wire brush, scrape, or
otherwise service spark plugs in poor
condition.Obtaina new plugfor bestresults.
12. Check the spark plug gap before installing any
sparkplug. See Figure 4-7and Figure 4-8.Attain a
correct gap when the feeler (or wire) passes
between the spark plug electrodes. It should pass
easily but with some resistance or drag; otherwise
adjust as necessary.
