Choosing the Correct Wheel & Tine Speeds
Withexperience,youwillfindthetillingdepthandtilling speed
combinationthatis bestforyourgarden.Settheenginethrottleleverat
a speedto givetheengineadequatepowerandyetallowitto operate
atthe slowestpossiblespeeduntilyouhaveachievedthemaximum
tillingdepthyoudesire.Fasterenginespeedsmaybedesirable
whenmakingfinalpassesthroughtheseedbedorwhencultivating.
Selectionofthe correctenginespeed,in relationtothe tillingdepth,
willensurea sufficientpowerleveltodothejobwithoutcausingthe
enginetolabor.
Suggested Tilling Patterns
Whenpreparinga seedbed,gooverthe samepathtwiceinthe
firstrow,thenoverlapone-halfthetiller widthontherestof the
passes.SeeFigure13.
Whenfinishedinonedirection,makea secondpassat a right
angle,SeeFigure14.Overlapeachpassfor thebestresults(in
veryhardground,itmaytakethreeorfour passesto thoroughly
pulverizethesoil.)

Tilling on a Slope
1. Till onlyon moderateslopes,neveronsteepgroundwherethe
footingisdifficult.
2. Tillingupanddownslopesisrecommendedoverterracing.Tilling
verticallyona slopeallowsmaximumplantingareaandalso
leavesroomforcultivating.
NOTE:Whentillingonslopes,besurethecorrectoil levelismain-
tainedinthe engine(checkeveryone-halfhourofoperation).The
inclineoftheslopewillcausetheoil toslantawayfromitsnormal
levelandthiscan starveenginepartsof requiredlubrication.Keepthe
motoroil levelatthefull pointat alltimes.
Tilling Up and Down a Slope
1. Tokeepsoilerosiontoa minimum,be suretoaddenoughorganic
matterto thesol sothatit hasgoodmoistureholdingtextureand
try toavoidleavingfootprintsorwheel marks.
2. Whentillingvertically,try tomakethe firstpassuphillas thetiller
digsmoredeeplygoinguphillthan itdoesdownhill.Insoft soilor
weeds,youmayhavetolift thehandlebarsslightlywhilegoingup-
