Regular Maintenance
Removing the Mower Deck
It may be necessary to remove the mower deck to
facilitate servicing the mower deck. The following
procedure details how to remove the mower deck
from the unit.
1. Park the machine on a flat, level surface such as
a concrete floor. Disengage the PTO, engage the
parking brake, turn off the engine, and remove the
ignition key.
2. Remove the PTO drive belt (see PTO DRIVE
BELT REPLACEMENT for removal instructions).
3. Lower the mower deck to its lowest cutting
position.
4. Block up the mower deck until all hanger chains
are slack. See Figure 53.

Battery Maintenance
NOTE: This unit is equipped with a maintenance-free
BCIU1 battery.
Removing the Tank
The right hand tank (A, Figure 51) must be removed
prior to performing maintenance on the battery.
1. Unscrew the three (3) wing bolts (B) that secure
the tank to the unit.
2. Remove the tank from the unit.
Cleaning the Battery and Cables
1. Disconnect the cables from the battery, negative
(black) cable first (A, Figure 52).
2. Clean the battery terminals and cable ends with a
wire brush until shiny.
3. Reinstall the battery and reattach the battery
cables, positive (red) cable first.
4. Coat the cable ends and battery terminals with
petroleum jelly or non-conducting grease.
5. Reinstall the tank by reversing the removal
process.

WARNING
Be careful when handling the battery. Avoid
spilling electrolyte. Keep flames and sparks
away from the battery.
When removing or installing battery cables,
disconnect the negative cable FIRST and
reconnect it LAST. If not done in this order, the
positive terminal can be shorted to the frame
by a tool.
