If the vehicle’s electrical circuits can be powered by
any other source of electricity (such as, a “dock-
side” power receptacle), there must be no possibil-
ity of connecting the different power sources to
the vehicle’s circuits at the same time. The dock-
side (utility) power source must be positively iso-
lated from the vehicle’s circuits whenever the gen-
erator is operating. Failure to isolate the vehicle’s
circuits from the dockside power supply when the
generator is running may result in damage to the
generator or in serious injury or death to dockside
(utility) power workers due to backfeed of electri-
cal energy. Installation and connection of the gen-
erator must comply with NFPA 70, Article 551, and
NFPA 1192 (latest editions).
2.7 BATTERY INSTALLATION
2.7.1 RECOMMENDED BATTERY
Install a battery that meets the following
requirements:
The battery must be a 12-volt, automotive-type
storage battery.
• Use a battery with minimum ratings of 70 amp-
hours and 360 cold-cranking amps.
NOTE:
If the battery is to be used to power other vehicle
accessories, as well as to start the generator, you
may need a battery with a larger capacity.
2.7.2 BATTERY CABLES
Using battery cables that are too long or too small in
diameter may cause a drop in voltage, which causes
starting problems. For the best cold weather starting,
the voltage drop between battery terminals and the
generator connection point should not exceed 0.12
volts per 100 amps of cranking current.
The QUIETPACT™ 65D generator is rated at about
160 DC amps of cranking current to operate the
starter and glow plugs.
Select battery cables based on (a) cable length and (b)
prevailing ambient temperatures. Generally, the
longer the cable and the colder the weather, the larg-
er the cable size must be, as shown in the chart.
2.7.3 BATTERY CABLE CONNECTIONS
1. Connect the battery cable from the battery post or
terminal, indicated by a POSITIVE, POS, or (+),
to the insulated lug on the unit frame (Figure 2.19
on page 33).
NOTE:
Check to be sure the cable boot for the positive
cable has been installed.
