OPERA TING INSTRUCTIONS FOR
USE WITH TRIMMER HEA D
WARNING: Always w ear eye protec-
tion. N ever lean over the trimmer head. Rocks
or debris can ricochet or be thrown into eyes
and face and cause b lindness or other serious
injury.
Before trimming,bringengineto aspeedsuffi-
cient to cut material to be trimmed.
Do not run the engine at a higher speed than
necessary . The cutting line will cut ef ficiently
when th e engine i s run at less than f ull throttle.
At lower speeds, there is l ess engine noise and
vibration. The cutting line will last longer and will
be less likely t o “weld” onto the spool.
Always r elease the t hrottle trigger and allow
the engine to return to idle s peed w hen not
cutting.
To stop engine:
S Release the throttle trigger.
S Move the ON/OFF switch t o the ON posi-
tion.
TRIMMER L INE ADVANCE
Thetrimmer linewilladvance approximately2
in. (5 cm) each t im e the bottom of t hetrimmer
head is tapped on the g round with the engine
running at full throttle.
The most efficient line length is the maximum
length allowed by the line limiter .Always keep
the shield i n place when th e tool is being oper-
ated.
To advance line:
S Operate the engine at full throttle.
S Hold the trimmer headparallelto andabove
the grassy area.
S Tap the bottom of the t rimmer head lightly on
the ground one time. A pproximately 2 in. (5
cm) o f line w ill be a dvanced with eac h tap.
Always tap the trimmer head on a grassy
area. Tapping on surfaces such as concrete
or asphalt can cause excessive w ear to the
trimmer head.If the line is worn down to 2
inches (5 cm) or less, more than one tap will
be required to obtain the most efficient line
length.
WARNING: Use only 0.080(2 mm)
diameter line. Other sizes of line will not ad-
vance properly and can cause serious injury.
Do not use other materials such as wire,
string, rope, etc. Wire can break off during
cutting and become a dangerous missile that
can cause serious injury.
CUTTING METHODS
WARNING: Use minimum speed
and donotcrowdthe linewhen cuttingaround
hard objects (rock, gravel, fence posts, etc.),
whichcandamage thetrimmer head,become
entangled in the line, or be thrown c ausing a
serious hazard.
S The tip of the line does the cutting. You will
achieve the best performance and mini-
mum linewear by not crowding the line into
the cutting area. The right and wrong ways
are shown below.
S The line will easily remove grass and
weeds fr omaround w alls, fences, treesand
flower beds, but it also can cut t he tender
bark of trees or shrubs and scar fences.
S For trimming or scalping, use less than full
throttle to increase line life and decrease
head wear, especially:
S During light duty cutting.
S Near objects around which the line can
wrap such as small posts, trees or fence
wire.
S For mowing orsweeping, us efullthrottlefor
a good clean job.
TRIMMING -- Hold the bottom of the trimmer
head about 3in. (8 cm) abovethe ground and
at an angle. Allow only the tip of the line to
make c ontact. Do not force trimmer line into
work area.
Trimming
SCALP ING -- The scalping technique removes
unwanted vegetation down t o the ground. Hold
the bottom of the trimmer head about 3 in. (8
cm) above theground andat an ang le. Allow t he
tip of t he line t o strike t he ground around trees,
posts, monuments, etc. This technique in-
creases line wear.
