Backlapping operation
WARNING: Always stop the engine and disengage
the traction drive and cutting reel drive before back-
lapping.
WARNING: When using the backlapping machine
and turning the reel blade do not allow your hand,
foot, or any part of your clothing, near the cutting
range.
WARNING: Apply abrasive to the reel blade with a
brush, not your fingers. Never use a short handle brush
to apply backlapping compound. Be sure to coat the
reel with backlapping compound using a brush with an
extension handle of at least 16 inches (40.64cm).
DANGER: Contact with the reel during backlapping
will cause personal injury. Always use a blade rotating
tool to rotate the reels.
IMPORTANT: For backlapping, always use lapping com-
pound #180 to #220.
WARNING: Stay clear of the reel knife during the
backlapping procedure.
For backlapping, prepare 2.0” (50 mm) wide strips of
newspaper and a lapping compound mixed with oil or a neutral
detergent as abrasive.
The mixing ratio is based on volume.

1. Place the machine on a flat, level surface. Tilt it
backwards to provide good access to the cutting reel and
bedknife. Secure machine into position so it will not
move.
2. Remove the cutting reel end cap located on the left side
of the cutting reel to expose the reel blade shaft bolt head.

3. Setup the backlapping machine and attach it to the
cutting reel as explained in the backlapping machine's
installation instructions.
4. Once the backlapping machine is setup and in the correct
position, turn the backlapping machine on momentarily
to make sure it is rotating in the backlapping direction
(opposite of the cutting direction).
5. Make sure the backlapping machine is turned off, and the
cutting reel is stopped.
6. Determine the cutting quality of cutting unit. Adjust the
reel to bedknife clearance so the bedknife is parallel and
just touching the reel. In very small increments, back the
bedknife off EVENLY on both sides (.001” -
.002”)(.03mm - .05mm) so it has minimal clearance from
the reel and is not making contact. Insert a piece of
newspaper between the rotary blades of the reel and the
bedknife. Turn the reel with the blade rotating tool in the
cutting direction to cut the newspaper and test the cut
