Refer to the Maintenance Schedule at the end of this section
and ensure that the recommendations are followed. More
frequent service is required when operating in adverse con-
ditions.
Use only Briggs & Stratton spark tester (1) to check for a
spark as shown in the diagram.
Replace the spark plug every 100 hours or every season,
which ever occurs first. A spark plug wrench is available
from any authorised Briggs & Stratton service dealer.
The spark plug gap (2) should be checked with a feeler
gauge and set at 0.76mm.

- Replace the element if very dirty or damaged.
- Remove screw (1)
- Carefully remove the air cleaner to prevent debris
from falling into the carburettor.
- Take the air cleaner apart and clean all parts. Wash
the element (2) in liquid detergent and water. Wrap
the element in a clean cloth and squeeze dry.
Saturate the element in engine oil. Wrap in a clean
cloth and squeeze to remove excess oil.
- Install the element and cup (3) into the body (4).
Install the element so that lip (5) extends over the
edge of the body to form a protective seal when
cover is assembled.
-Install the air cleaner securely on the carburettor
with the screw.
