S Keep all parts of your body away from the
chain when the engine is running.
S Keep children, bystanders, and animals a
minimumof 30feet(10meters) awayfrom
the work area. D o not allow other people
or animals to benear the chain saw when
starting or operating the chain saw.
S Do not handle or oper ate a c hain saw when
you are fatigued, ill, or upset, o r i f you ha ve
taken alcohol, d rugs, o r medication. You
must bein goodphysical condition andmen-
tally alert. Chain saw work is strenuous. If
you ha ve any condition th at m ight b e a ggra-
vated by strenuous work, check with your
doctor before o pe rating a chai n saw.
S Carefullyplanyoursawingoperationinad-
vance. Donotstartcuttinguntilyouhavea
clearworkarea,securefooting,and,ifyou
are felling trees, a planned retreat path.
OPERATE YOUR SAW SAFE LY
S Donotoperateachain sawwith o nehand.
Serious injury tothe operator, helpers, by-
standers or any combination oftheseper-
sons may r esult from one-handed opera-
tion. A chain saw is intended for
two-handed use.
S Operatethechainsaw onlyin awell-venti-
lated outdoor area.
S Donotoperate sawfromaladder orinatree.
S Makesure thechain will notmakecontact
with any object while starting the engine.
Never try to start the saw when t he guide
bar is in a cut.
S Do notput pressure onthe saw at th e endof
the cut. Applying pressure can cause you t o
lose control when the cut i s completed.
S Stop the engine before setting the saw
down.
S Do not operate a chain saw that is dam-
aged, improperly adjusted, or not com-
pletely a nd securely assembled. Always
replace bar, ch ain, hand guard, or chain
brakeimmediately ifit becomesdamaged,
broken or is otherwise removed.
S With the engine stopped, hand carry the
chain sawwiththe muffleraway fromyour
body , and the guide bar and chain to the
rear, preferably covered with ascabbard.
MAINTAIN YOUR SAW IN GOOD
WORKING ORDER
S Haveallchainsawserviceperformedby a
qualifiedservice dealerwith theexception
oftheitems listed in the maintenance sec-
tionofthismanual. Forexample,ifimprop-
er toolsare u sedtoremove orhold thefly-
wheelwhenservicingtheclutch,structural
damage to the flywheel can occur and
cause the flywheel to burst.
S Make certain the saw chain stops moving
when the t h rottle trigger is r eleased. For
correction, refer to CARBURETOR AD-
JUSTMENT.
S Never modify your saw in any way.
S Keep thehandles dry,clean,andfree ofoil
or fuel mixture.
S Keep fuel and oil caps, screws, and f as-
teners securely tightened.
S Use only Poulan accesso ries a nd replace-
ment par ts as r ecommended.
HANDLE FUEL WITH CAUTION
S Do not smoke while handling f uel or while
operating the saw.
S Eliminateall sources of sparks or flamein
the areas where fuel is mixed o r poured.
Thereshould benosmoking,openflames,
orworkthat couldcausesparks. Allowen-
gine to cool before refueling.
S Mix and pour fuel in an outdoor area on
bare ground; store fuel in a cool, dry, well
ventilated place; and use an approved,
marked container for all fuel purposes.
Wipe up all fuel spills before starting s aw.
S Move atleast 10feet (3meters) fromfuel-
ing site before starting engine.
S Turn the engine off and let saw cool in a
non-combustible area, not on dry leav es,
straw, paper, etc. Slowly remove fuel cap
and refuel unit.
S Storetheunitandfuelinanareawherefuel
vapors cannot reach sparks or open
flamesfrom waterheaters,electricmotors
or switches, furnaces, etc.
KICKBACK
WARNING: Avoid kickback which
can result inserious injury. Kickback is the
backward,upwardorsuddenforwardmotion
of the guide bar occurring when the saw
chainnear theuppertip oftheguidebarcon-
tacts any object s uch as a logor branch, or
when the wood closes in and pinches the
saw chaininthecut.Contactin gaforeignob-
ject in the wood can also result in loss of
chain saw control.
S Rotational Kickbackcanoccur whenthe
moving chaincontacts anobjectattheup-
per tip of the guide bar. This contact can
cause the chain to dig into the object,
which stops the chain for an instant. The
result is a lightning fast, reverse reaction
which kicks the guide bar up and b ack to-
ward the operator.
