holes. This w ill keep the shaft f rom turning while
loosen ing the trimmer head. Remove the trim-
mer head by turning clockwise . Remove t he
screwdri v er. To rem ove th e plastic shi eld, lo os-
en and rem ovewi ng nut. Pivot shield to release
bracket from slot. See INSTALLATION OF
THECUTTINGHEADand ATTACHINGTHE
PLASTICSHIELD forillustrations. Be sureto
store all par ts and instr uctions for future use.
Never use the trimmer head with the metal
blade installed.
ATTACHING THE METAL SHIELD
WARNING: The metal shield must
be properly installed on the tool anytime the
tool isusedwitha blade.The forward tip ofthe
metal shield helps to reduce the occu rrence
of bladethrust which cancauseseriousinjury
such as amputation to the operator or by-
standers. Failure to install the shield in the
position shown can result in serious injury to
the operator. The lengthof the shield must be
aligned wi th the length o f the shaft.
1. Place the metal shield under the gear box,
and a lign t he screw ho les.

2. Insert and thread the 4 mounting screws
through the holes of the gearbox and the
metal shield. Tightenevenly andsecure-
ly with the hex wrench provided.
INSTALLATION OF THE METAL
BLADE
WARNING: Wear prot ecti ve gloves
when handling or perf orming maintenance on
the blade to avoid i njury. The blade is sharp and
can cut you even when i t is not moving.
WARNING: Donot use any blades, or
fast ening hardware other than the washers and
nuts shown i n the following illust rations. These
parts must be provided by Poulan/WEED
EATER and installedas shown b elow . Failure to
use proper parts can cause the blade to fly off
and seri ously hurt you o r o thers.
NOTE: The dustcupan d retaining washer are
locate d on t he gearbox shaft and notin the par ts
bag. A ll other fasteners m entioned in the f ollow-
ing asse mbly st eps are in the parts bag.
1. Remove the retaining washer fr o m the
threaded shaft of the gearbox. Leave the
dust cup on the sh aft.
2. Inst all theblade andthe retainingwasher
over the threaded shaft.
3. Make surethe raisedpart of theretaining
washer is facing the gearbox and the
raised area fi ts into the hole in the center
of the blade.
4. Slide the blade and re taining washer onto
the shaft of the gearbox.
5. Place t he cupped washer onto t he shaft.
Make sure thecupped side ofthe washer
is toward the blade.
6. Inst all theblade nut bythreading ontothe
shaft counterclockwise.

NOTE: Make sur e all parts are in p lace as il-
lustr ated, an d the blade is sandwiched between
the dust cup and the re taining washer. There
should be no space between the blade and the
dust cu p or the retaining washer.
7. Align hole in dust cup with hole in side of
gearbox by rotating the blade.
8. Insert a small screwdriver into aligned
holes. This will keep the shaft from turn-
ing while tightening the blade nut.

9. TIghten blade nutfirmly witha wrenchwhile
holding screwdrive r in position.
10. Remove the screwdriver.
11. Turn blade by hand. If the blade binds
against the shield,or appears to beuneven,
the blade is not centere d, and yo u must r e-
install.
NOTE: To remove blade , i nsert screwdriver
into aligned holes. Unthr ead the nut and r e-
move parts. Be sure to store pa rts and instr uc-
tions for fu ture use.
