andtightendownusingthefocuserlockingscrew(Fig.4-15).
You have now completed the assembly of your Red Planet
TM
telescope.
Wewillnowneedtomakethenecessaryadjustmentsinordertouseyour
telescope properly.
Aligning the Finder Scope:
Thelowpowerandwideeldofviewprovidedbythe10x30mmnder
scope(Fig.1-1)providesaquickandeasywaytosightanobjectpriorto
lookingthroughthehigh-powertelescope.Thenderscopemustrstbe
properly aligned with the telescope in order to work properly. This alignment
is best performed during the daylight. Follow the steps below to align your
nderscopeproperly:
•PlacetheHuygenian20mmeyepiece(Fig.1-3)intothefocuser
(Fig.1-2)ofthetelescope.
•Loosenthehorizontallockknob(Fig.1-7)andthealtituderodcoarse
adjustmentlockknob(Fig.3-14).
•Pointthemaintelescopeataspeciclandobject200yardsormore
awayandcenterthatobjectinthetelescopeeldofview.Lock
downthehorizontallockknob(Fig.1-7)andthealtituderodcoarse
adjustmentlockknob(Fig.3-14)beingcarefultokeeptheobject
centered.
•Nowlookthroughthenderscopeandloosenortightenthender
scopebracketthumbscrews(Fig.5-16)untilthecrosshairsare
centeredonthesameobject.Focusbyturningthenderscope
focusknob(Fig.5-17)untiltheimageinthenderscopeis
sharp and clear.
•Checkthealignmentatnighttimebyrepeatingthisprocesswitha
brightstarorthemoon.Makeanynecessaryadjustments.
Nowthatyournderscopeisproperlyaligned,anyobjectcenteredinyour
nderscopeshouldalsobecenteredinyourtelescope.
Calculating Power:
Themagnicationofatelescopedependsonboththefocallengthofyour
telescope as well as the eyepiece you use. There is a simple formula you can
usetodeterminethemagnicationyouareusingatanygiventime.Simply
divide the focal length of the telescope by the focal length of the eyepiece.
For example, if you are using the 20mm eyepiece with your TP-100 telescope
the power would be:
Power = 700mm / 20mm = 35x
Usinganeyepiecewithasmallerfocallengthwillincreasethemagnication
ofyourtelescope.Itisalwaysbesttostartatthelowestmagnication
conguration.Thewidereldofviewmakesiteasiertospotfaraway
objects.Onceanobjectiscenteredinyoureldofviewyoucanswitchto
thehigherpowercongurations.
UnderstandingCelestialMovement:
Inordertogetthemostenjoymentoutofyourtelescopeitisnecessaryto
knowthebasicsofhowcelestialobjectsmoveacrossthesky.Duetothe
rotationoftheearth,celestialobjectsappeartomovefromEasttoWest
acrossthesky,muchliketheSun.Youwillnoticethismovementasan
objectinyourtelescopeeldofviewwillslowlymoveacrosstheeldand
outofview.Continuousadjustmentisneededtokeepanobjectinthe
eldofview.
