STL Programming 3

3. STL Programming
This chapter differs from the rest of the contents in this manual as it has been written with a
trainin
aspect in mind. STL/SFC pro
rammin
, althou
h havin
been available for man
ears, is still misunderstood and misrepresented. We at Mitsubishi would like to take this
opportunit
to tr
to correct this oversi
ht as we see STL/SFC pro
rammin
becomin
as
important as ladder st
le pro
rammin
.
3.1 What is STL, SFC And IEC1131 Part 3?
The followin
explanation is ver
brief but is desi
ned to quickl
outline the differences and
similarities between STL, SFC and IEC1131 part 3.
In recent
ears Sequential Function Chart (or SFC) st
le pro
rammin
(includin
other similar
st
les such as Grafcet and Funktionplan) have become ver
popular throu
h out Europe and
have prompted the creation of IEC1131 part 3.
The IEC1131 SFC standard has been desi
ned to become an interchan
eable pro
rammin
lan
ua
e. The idea bein
that a pro
ram written to IEC1131 SFC standards on one
manufacturers PLC can be easil
transferred (converted) for use on a second manufacturers
PLC.
STL pro
rammin
is one of the basic pro
rammin
instructions included in all FX PLC famil
members. The abbreviation STL actuall
means STep Ladder pro
rammin
.
STL pro
rammin
is a ver
simple concept to understand
et can provide the user with one of
the most powerful pro
rammin
techniques possible. The ke
to STL lies in its abilit
to allow
the pro
rammer to create an operational pro
ram which ‘flows’ and works in almost exactl
the
same manner as SFC. This is not a coincidence as this pro
rammin
technique has been
developed deliberatel
to achieve an eas
to pro
ram and monitor s
stem.
One of the ke
differences to Mitsubishi’s STL pro
rammin
s
stem is that it can be entered
into a PLC in 3 formats. These are:
Ι
) Instruction - a word/mnemonic entr
s
stem
ΙΙ
) Ladder - a
raphical pro
ram construction method usin
a rela
lo
ic s
mbols
ΙΙΙ
) SFC - a flow chart st
le of STL pro
ram entr
(similar to SFC)
Examples of these pro
rammin
methods can be seen on pa
e 2-1.
