why is my mower spurting oil from the side-everyth...

why is my mower spurting oil from the side-everything was fine until I took th blade off to sharpen-since then it wont start-the spurting of the engine oil has left the oil capacity almost empty-before I fill it again I just want to make sure what the problem is
