When I pull to start the trimmer, it makes a loud metallic sound, and the pull handle retracts easily, but, it never starts. Something feels loose, like it isn't catching hold of what actually starts the engine.

0 I use a different model trimmer but it is also made by Ryobi. My problem, and what yours could be is this: On one side of the spool that the rope wraps around is a gear that turns the flywheel of the engine. The gear is thoroughly stripped. It will not grip the flywheel at all. It can be replaced easily enough but I cannot for the life of me find a replacement or even who makes the spool.
