5 I have made my living for years with the use of a chainsaw and very few people can be an expert saw sharpener. It is a skill that requires a lot of practise or at least a knack for it. Most people are better to bring it in to a saw shop to get it sharpened. You can check out a U Tube video for some excellent pointers if you have access to the internet. I learned from necessity by trial and error. If you wait for your chain to be really dull until it will not cut anymore it will be way more work bringing it back to new. If you give it a touch up once in a while it will be a lot easier and you can follow the original angle on the teeth. The secret is be extra careful never to cut into dirt sand or gravel. Don't drag trees through dirt and mud before you cut into it. Avoid nails an screws at all costs. A small electric sharpener is a nice tool to use with some practice but if you are going to use a hand file make sure it's a good one the right size for your chain and once the file is dull throw it out and get a new one. Hope this helps.
