what keeps the battery charged? I can jump start ...

what keeps the battery charged? I can jump start my mower, disconnect the jumper cables and a minute later it dies again. If it was a ca I would say the alternater was out. but a lawn mower I hav'ent a clue. WHAT MIGHT THE PROBLEM BE?
