0 yes you need one because otherwise it is nearly impossible to get a good seal when you close the lid. and when it isn't sealed tight enough and you try to run the jets, you'll hear air getting sucked into the cartridge compartment and the jets won't work right (some of them won't work, like when it's airlocked)
