recently was given this item blades don't turn what should i be looking for? do the blades work off a belt

0 You are correct, the blades are belt driven. On the left side of the chasis there is a plastic assembly held on by several screws. (Left side when standing behind the machine, i.e. you're by the handle). The belt is engaged through a platen that's attached to the cable that's connected to the handle. When you squeeze the handle it pulls the cable and applies tension to the belt and engages it. You can order the belt through sears (partsdirect.com) for about $15 if the belt needs to be replaced. It's not a major task to replace the belt, maybe 1/2 hour.
