I pushed down on the lever that controls the…

for Craftsman Lawn Mower 917.379440

I pushed down on the lever that controls the front drive and it wouldn't engage. I noticed the cable was loose, and I took of the housing where the lever is and the cable was frayed with only a few of the wires still holding onto the little barrel metal piece. Also there is a spring in there that I am unable to figure out where in the housing it would go. I need some help identifying parts and what goes where, or what needs to be replaced. any help?
