3 I had starter problems also, so purchased from MTD a starter assembly kit 753-04823. I replaced all of the parts with the new parts from the kit. Kit included rope, pulley, starter assist spring (spring goes between pulley and the inner ratchet segment), inner ratchet segment and pal nut. After several pulls the engine started. I allowed the engine to run 15-20 minutes. The next time I tried to start the engine, the flywheel pawls wouldn't engage the teeth on the pulley inner ratchet segment. Disassembly revealed that the ratchet teeth were again worn down and could not engage the flywheel pawls. I called MTD technical service about the problem. I asked if they were having problems with the ratchet segments being defective. Their reply was negative but implied that there was probably misalignment or unit was improperly re-assembled. Sorry, I have no solution. Disappointed Bolens / MTD customer
