Product Problem: Lawn mower takes too long to start

I have a Sears Craftsman push mower that I bought in 1999. It still works, but I have to pull the string several times, as well as pumping the primer alot to get it started. I took it to the Sears repair shop, and they said old gasoline was the reason, but it seems like something else. I would appreciate your help on this question. What can I do to get it to start on the fifth or sixth try?

STARTS 1'ST PULL WHEN GOLD, BUT
AFTER 3-4 MINUTES RUNNING IT STARTS SKIPPING PRETTY BAD AND WON'T RESTART UNTILL IT COOLS DOWN. I HAVE CLEANED THE CARB. ADJUST MAG. CHECKED THE VALVES
IT SOUNDS LIKE STICKY EXH. VALVE
TOOK IT OUT CLEANED.
NO DIFFERENCE
PULLING HAIRS HELP.
