Engine bucks when pulling starter

found used mower. Has bent blade (one end ). Engine bucks when trying to start (starter cord pulls out of hand ! ). Engine did start and ran smooth but lacked power. flywheel key ok. blade adapter key ok. bottom shaft does not seem bent. Why is there such a severe buck ?
